Girl Skateboards Studio Series 001: Jules de Balincourt
Girl Skateboards Studio Series 001: Jules de BalincourtThe Girl Skateboard Company proudly presents the Studio Series, featuring an evolving group of internationally recognized contemporary artists. The selected works aim to expand upon the traditional expectations of skateboard art, by featuring artists more commonly associated with contemporary art galleries and museums. The Studio Series bridges the gap between skateboarding and some of our most creative friends. Jules de Balincourt is a Brooklyn based artist and friend of Girl Skateboards. He was born in Paris, France, and after briefly traveling with his mother and sister through Ibiza, France, and Mexico, settled in Southern California in his adolescence. Jules spent most of his high school years surfing and skateboarding. After a few years at Santa Barbara City College, where the primary focus was pot and pottery, he moved to Oakland to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the California College of Arts in San Francisco. He currently resides in Bushwick, where for three years he ran Starr Space, a community project that hosted everything from performances to yoga and community church events. Jules’ has had solo exhibitions at the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Canada), the Rochechouart Museum (France), the Modern Fort Worth (Texas), and the Kasseler Kunstverein (Germany). In 2013, Rizzoli published a hardcover monograph of his work spanning 10 years of his career. He is currently represented by Salon 94 in New York, Victoria Miro in London, and Thaddaeus Ropac Galerie in Paris.
