Made in 2007 together with members of the Uganda Skateboard Union. THE UGANDA SKATEBOARD UNION is an organization in Kitintale, Kampala, Uganda, that enables youth to skateboard and reap the benefits of a fun and creative activity. My involvement with the USU began in 2006 when I worked together with Jack Mubiru and local youth to build what became the first skateboard park in East Africa. Also with Jack, I co-founded and set up the NGO that is now nationally registered in Uganda as The Uganda Skateboard Union. In total I spent one year and a half on this first trip to Uganda. The Documentary Project 2013: In May I will be returning to Uganda to shoot the film: This film is setting out to tell the story of the Uganda Skateboard Union; its history and its present state- including its positive and negative effects on the skaters and community. The concept of this documentary film is for me to work together with members of the Uganda Skateboard Union in its production. I have chosen this concept because I want to make a non-traditional documentary film, one where the subjects will have an active voice in how they appear in the film. I think this is especially important given the film's African setting, I say this because I feel there are too many films made about African subjects that are put together from a completely foreign point of view. This film has been in the works for a long time now, and I've been trying to figure the best way to tell the Union's story and to include the skaters and include myself, and this feels the best way to do it.
