You'll need a soft "squishy" surface at the minimum. the end of a pen will work, but I use an awl (ice pick) angle the outer race down so all the balls fall into the running surface of the bearing, angle the inner race in, and pull it into position. separate all the balls, snap ball retainer in, put shield into place and you're good to go. don't expect to get it on your first try, but you'll get it.
