Battle at The Berrics first began in 2008 after Steve Berra convinced Mike Mo Capaldi and Eric Koston to play a friendly battle to help raise the spirits of a 10-year old boy named Johnny Romano, an avid skater who was in the hospital battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia and subsequently passed away on September 23rd 2008. Both Steve Berra and Eric Koston are forever indebted to Johnny, as is the entire skateboarding community, for being the inspiration behind what has become one of the most beloved skateboarding traditions, Battle at The Berrics.
