Skateistan Yak Daqa #3: "Bombing" Jalalabad
Skateistan Yak Daqa #3: "Bombing" Jalalabad You might have heard of the Bolivian "Death Road", the North Yungas, but have you heard of Jalalabad Road, Afghanistan? Jalalabad Road is one of Afghanistan's, if not the world's, most dangerous highways. Some say there are so many accidents and terrorist attacks here that people have stopped counting. The narrow two-lane 'highway' winds treacherously between the mountains that separate Kabul from the Pakistani border. It is renowned for deadly pile-ups and a heavy Taliban presence, and is often closed entirely. Women are rarely seen traveling here without a burqa or large scarf enveloping their bodies. One Friday in spring 2011, Merza Mohammadi, Oliver Percovich and Jake Simkin of Skateistan rode their motorbikes out of Kabul to Jalalabad, stopping along the way for nearly 20 kilometres of downhill skating.
